Bio
Chord Drake fell in love with the drums at ten years old after watching his cousin play kit for the first time. The instrument’s powerful, rhythmic, and visceral nature resonated with him immediately, sparking a passion that has shaped his life and musicianship ever since.
With over 20 years of drumming experience, Chord has studied with exceptional players including Chris Lee, Allen Ward, and JP Bouvet. His influences span a wide range of iconic drummers—Vinnie Colaiuta, Dennis Chambers, Steve Gadd, Carter Beauford, Nate Smith, Benny Greb, Chad Smith, Bud Gaugh, and Adam Deitch—whose artistry continues to inspire both his playing and his teaching.
Chord draws his deepest inspiration from music and musicians that foster connection—to oneself, to the sound, to collaborators, and to the listeners. He finds great joy in helping others explore their relationship with their instrument, especially when that exploration brings greater clarity, confidence, and integration both behind the kit and beyond.
Over the years, Chord has performed in big-band jazz ensembles, alt-rock bands, funk-fusion groups, jazz combos, and salsa bands, giving him a broad stylistic foundation. As an instructor, he specializes in helping drummers develop stronger feel, improved technical facility, and the ability to translate ideas fluidly into their hands.
In addition to being a musician, Chord is a therapist and educator with extensive experience working with youth. His teaching philosophy prioritizes relationship-building, creativity, and authentic self-expression. He views drumming as a vehicle for discovering one’s own voice, and strives to help each student connect deeply with their craft and communicate through rhythm with freedom and confidence.
